Can You Vape On a Plane?

Ever thought about whether you could bring along your vapes and e-cigarettes when you're jetting off somewhere? If you're going international, the rules and laws of vaping at your destination might be a bit of a grey area.

Many travelers scratch their heads over the regulations around carrying a vape on a plane. If you're one of them, you're not alone - it's a common question, can I pack my vape or e-cigarette for the journey?

In this piece, we'll walk you through the ins and outs of taking and using vapes and e-cigarettes while traveling by air.

What's the deal with Vapes and E-cigarettes?

Vapes or vaping devices are gadgets powered by batteries and are used to inhale an aerosol which usually contains flavorings and nicotine. They often mimic the look of traditional cigars, cigarettes, or pipes, although e-cigarettes with refillable tanks might look slightly different. Regardless of their exterior, these devices function similarly and have comparable components. As of now, there are over 46 recognized e-cigarette brands out there.

Some e-cigarettes are designed to look like regular pipes, cigars, or cigarettes, while others resemble USB sticks and pens. A typical vape consists of four key parts: a mouthpiece to inhale the liquid, a power source or battery, a heating element or atomizer, and a cartridge (also known as a pod or reservoir) that contains the e-liquid. This e-liquid includes various chemicals, flavorings, and nicotine.

In most traditional e-cigarettes, a battery-powered heating device is triggered by puffing, which vaporizes the liquid. The user then inhales the resultant vapor or aerosol.

Can I take my Vapes and E-cigarettes on a Plane?

Traveling with a vape calls for adhering to certain rules for safety and legality. In the US, for example, the TSA specifies that "Electronic smoking devices are allowed only in carry-on baggage. Passengers are required to take effective measures to prevent accidental activation of the heating element of the device when transporting the devices."

That said, electronic nicotine delivery systems, atomizers, vape pens, vaporizers, and battery-powered e-cigarettes cannot be checked in; they must be carried either on your person or in your carry-on bags. And if you're stopped at the gate for checking with these devices in your carry-on, you'll need to remove all vaping devices and electronic cigarettes.

TSA also advises consulting your airline for any additional restrictions. Besides these rules, TSA states that each lithium-ion battery should not exceed a Wh rating of 100 Wh and for lithium metal batteries, the lithium content should not be over 2 grams.

In the UK, the CAA states you can't take vapes in your hold luggage – the suitcase you leave at the check-in desk. In Germany, you can't vape on airplanes or at airports, and you can only bring your vape in your carry-on baggage. In France, you can bring your e-liquid or vape kits, but only in your carry-on baggage through security. Checked baggage is a no-go for any electronic cigarette.

In Russia, carrying a vape can lead to a fine and using it at Russian airports is banned. Singapore allows personal vaporizers, e-cigarettes, and nicotine delivery systems only in carry-on baggage, with in-cabin use prohibited.

In Japan, passengers can bring vaping devices on board, provided they are packed properly and spare lithium batteries are in carry-on luggage. Disposable vapes or e-cigarettes must be stored in your hand luggage to minimize fire risk. These must be stored in the plastic bag provided for liquids, with each passenger allowed only one such bag. Keep in mind that although you can bring your e-cigarette, it cannot be used while on the plane. No airline allows vaping on board, and doing so will be treated like smoking with serious repercussions.

When it comes to navigating airport security, be ready to explain your vaping equipment to TSA agents. As long as you've packed your vape correctly, you shouldn't face too many issues. It's a good idea to charge your device beforehand as you might have to demonstrate that it's indeed a vape and not something suspicious.

What's the Vape Scene at the Airport?

The rules for vaping at airports depend on the specific airport. However, most airports, including those in the US, Russia, the UK, and Japan, prohibit vaping. Some might have a designated smoking area, but that's not the norm. Once inside the terminal, you're generally not allowed to vape or smoke until you've reached your destination and found a designated area.

Most airports don't publicize their smoking and vaping policies, so it's wise to check beforehand. Despite vapes being deemed safer than traditional cigarettes, many airlines and airports have opted for a no-vaping policy.

The general advice is to avoid vaping at an airport to stay out of trouble. Wait until you've reached your destination and are outside the airport. Due to the strict rules, some people prefer to buy a vape after reaching their destination.

Vape Juice and Flying – What's the Deal?

Let's address the pressing issue of vape juice when you're jet setting. If you're packing e-liquids for your e-cigarette, then you'll need to be aware of how to properly store them for the journey.

Liquid restrictions are a big deal when flying, and e-liquids fall into the same category as toiletries like shampoo or toothpaste. For carry-on luggage, the TSA enforces the 3-1-1 liquids rule. This rule states that any liquid, gel, or aerosol must be in a container of 3.4 ounces (100ml) or less. Moreover, all your liquid containers should fit into one quart-sized, clear, plastic, and zip-top bag. So, your vape juice bottles need to adhere to these regulations. And remember, just like with other liquids, changes in air pressure during the flight can cause your e-liquid bottles to leak, so make sure to pack them in a way that prevents your other items from getting ruined.

As for checked luggage, there are no specific regulations from the TSA on carrying vape juice. However, it's always a good practice to check with your airline before you fly. Keep in mind, certain countries have their own rules and restrictions on nicotine strength and quantity of e-liquids you can carry, so make sure to research that in advance.

Tips for Traveling with Vapes

So you've decided to take your vape along for the ride? Great, but before you do, here are some pro tips to make sure your trip goes smoothly:

  • Clean Your Device: Before packing your vape or e-cigarette, give it a good clean. This can help prevent any residue or liquid from leaking and causing potential issues.

  • Disassemble Your Device: It's a good idea to disassemble your vape before traveling. Remove the batteries, tank, and atomizer. This can help prevent any accidental firing or leakage of e-juice.

  • Pack Spare Parts: If you're traveling for an extended period, consider packing some spare parts such as extra coils or a backup vape pen. This can be a lifesaver if something breaks or malfunctions while you're away.

  • Respect Local Laws: Always research and respect the local laws regarding vaping in the country you're visiting. Some countries have strict rules or even outright bans on e-cigarettes and vaping.

  • Keep Your Chargers Handy: Don’t forget your chargers, and keep them easily accessible in case you need to demonstrate your device is functional during a security check.

  • Use Protective Cases: Consider using protective cases for your vape gear. This will protect your equipment from potential damage during the trip.
